It is not a cleaner and it is not a substitute for one. Five steps, and the order matters.

3. Let it dry, or get it as dry as you can. Spraying onto a soaked cushion just adds moisture to a humid room.

4. Spray at a distance and let it work. Follow the directions on the label for how far to hold the bottle and where it can be used. Test on a small hidden patch of fabric first, especially on anything coloured or delicate.

5. Keep your pet off until it's dry. Cats in particular will sit on a freshly sprayed cushion the moment your back is turned.

Ask five questions.

Does it mask or deodorise? Heavy perfume that fades in an hour is masking. You want something that reduces the odour and leaves the room neutral.

Is the scent light? Cats have a far sharper sense of smell than we do. A strong fragrance that you find pleasant can put a cat off using a tray or a bed entirely. Light is better.

Are the instructions clear? If you can't tell how to use it from the bottle, that's a real problem, not a small one. Clear instructions are the difference between a product that works and a product that sits under the sink.
