Cat Bite First Aid in Malaysia: When to See a Doctor and Check SOCSO Eligibility

Cat Bite First Aid in Malaysia: When to See a Doctor and Check SOCSO Eligibility

PERKESO has just announced that employees who contribute to the scheme may be eligible to claim SOCSO benefits if they are bitten by a cat, whether the bite happens at work or at home. If you have just been bitten, read the first-aid steps below. If you are looking into whether you can claim, scroll to the PERKESO section.

If a cat has just bitten you and the skin is broken, start by washing it: soap and running water, for at least 15 minutes. That is the Ministry of Health's advice for any animal bite or scratch. Then read the rest of this guide.

*Editorial note: this guide was compiled from Ministry of Health, PERKESO and medical reference sources. It has not been medically reviewed. For diagnosis, treatment, rabies post-exposure treatment, antibiotics, tetanus vaccination or SOCSO eligibility, follow the advice of a registered healthcare professional or a PERKESO officer. For deep wounds, hand bites, possible rabies exposure or worsening symptoms, get medical care promptly.*

The short version

  • Wash the wound with soap under running water for at least 15 minutes.
  • Cover it loosely with a clean dressing.
  • See a doctor the same day if the skin is broken, especially on the hand, face or near a joint, or if the cat is a stray or its vaccinations are unknown.
  • Ask the doctor about tetanus and, where relevant, rabies.
  • Keep your medical certificate and receipts. If the bite happened while you were working and you contribute to PERKESO, it may fall under the Employment Injury Scheme. If it happened outside work in Malaysia, check whether you were covered under PERKESO's LINDUNG 24 Jam scheme at the time of the bite.

What should I do in the first few minutes after a cat bite?

1. Wash for a full 15 minutes. Soap and running water, gently, without scrubbing the wound open. The length of the wash matters more than anything you put on afterwards.

2. Apply an antiseptic if you have one, then cover the bite loosely with a clean dressing.

3. Write down what happened. Whose cat it was, whether it is a stray, whether it is vaccinated, and the time of the bite. The doctor will ask, and so will PERKESO if you make a claim.

4. Get it seen the same day if the skin is broken, especially for a bite on the hand, face or near a joint, a deep bite, or a bite from a stray. After that, keep watching it for 48 hours: spreading redness, swelling, warmth, pus, red streaks running away from the wound or a fever mean you need to be seen again urgently.

Why are cat bites riskier than they look?

A cat's teeth are narrow and sharp. They make a small hole on the surface that can reach deep into the tissue underneath, and the skin often closes over it quickly, sealing bacteria inside.

The bacterium usually involved is *Pasteurella multocida*. A clinical review in the StatPearls medical reference calls it the pathogen most commonly associated with infection after animal bites and scratches, and reports that wound cultures grew it in 75% of cat bites against 50% of dog bites. The same review classes any injury to the hand as high-risk and advises that it is assessed promptly by a medical professional.

None of this is a reason to be afraid of your cat. Most bites happen during play, handling or a stressful bath. It is a reason to treat a small-looking bite as a real wound.

When should I see a doctor after a cat bite?

Because cat bites are puncture wounds that can become infected quickly, it is sensible to see a doctor the same day if the bite broke the skin, and especially if:

  • it is on your hand, fingers, face or near a joint;
  • it is deep, very painful or bleeding heavily;
  • the cat is a stray, or you do not know its vaccination history;
  • you are not sure when you last had a tetanus jab;
  • any sign of infection appears.

The doctor will clean the wound properly, decide whether you need antibiotics (the StatPearls review notes they are favoured for high-risk injuries such as hand bites), and check your tetanus status. Ask for a medical report and keep your medical certificate. You will need both for any PERKESO claim.

Is rabies a risk from a cat bite in Malaysia?

It is a real risk in Sarawak, which has an ongoing rabies outbreak. In October 2025 the Ministry of Health reported six human rabies deaths in Sarawak that year, and said cats were involved in 61.6% of the 10,322 animal bite and scratch cases recorded there between 1 January and 18 October 2025. A cat bite or scratch in Sarawak should always be seen by a doctor.

Wherever you are in Malaysia, tell the doctor where the bite happened and whether the cat is a stray, unvaccinated, or has been behaving strangely. Whether you need rabies treatment is the doctor's decision, not one to make at home. The Ministry of Health's advice is to go straight to the nearest clinic or hospital, where the doctor can decide whether you need post-exposure treatment (PEP).

Does SOCSO (PERKESO) cover a cat bite?

It may, depending on where you were bitten and whether you contribute to PERKESO.

Bitten while working. If you are an employee who contributes to PERKESO and you were bitten while doing your job, for example as a groomer, veterinary assistant, pet shop worker or paid shelter worker, the injury may be covered by PERKESO's Employment Injury Scheme, which the agency describes as protection for employees against accidents and occupational diseases. Whether a particular bite qualifies is PERKESO's decision. Tell your employer the same day, so the accident can be reported.

Bitten outside work, including at home. Since 1 June 2026, PERKESO's LINDUNG 24 Jam scheme (the Non-Occupational Accident Scheme) covers accidents outside working hours within Malaysia for employees who contribute to it. Cat bites are included:

  • In July 2026, PERKESO announced that a veterinary assistant whose finger was badly bitten by a stray cat at her home in Seri Kembangan received 38 days of sick-leave benefit under the scheme and could also claim her medical costs (PERKESO media release).
  • In October 2026, PERKESO said it has approved cat-bite claims for treatment and sick leave, and that the size of an injury does not decide cover. What matters is that the incident counts as a protected accident, a doctor confirms you need treatment, and the injury affects your ability to work (SAYS, citing Berita Harian).

Before you claim, check:

  • You are an active PERKESO contributor and were covered under LINDUNG 24 Jam at the time of the bite. Participation is voluntary for Malaysian employees, so check your status, as contribution and opt-out rules may change.
  • The bite happened in Malaysia.
  • A doctor treated you, and you have the medical report, medical certificate and receipts.
  • You file through the LINDUNG Faedah portal or at a PERKESO office, as The Star explains.

PERKESO decides each claim on its facts, so treat this as a guide to whether it is worth applying, not a promise that you will be paid.

How do I stop my cat biting during grooming?

Most grooming bites happen because a cat is overstimulated, uncomfortable, or has learned that biting ends the bath. Before you bathe a nervous cat, run through these five checks:

1. Read the warning signs. A lashing or thumping tail, flattened ears or a low growl means stop now, not after one more rinse.

2. Keep it short. Have everything within reach before the cat goes near the water: shampoo open, towel ready, lukewarm water already running.

3. Introduce the shampoo first. Let the cat sniff the bottle before bath day, and use a mild, easy-rinse shampoo suitable for cats so the bath is as short and calm as possible. If you use the Omega Pets Signature Shampoo, check the product page for suitability, and ask your vet first if your cat has a skin condition, is very young or reacts badly to grooming.

4. Do not scruff unless a vet has shown you how. Restraint done badly causes panic.

5. Notice a change. A cat that used to tolerate grooming and has started biting may be in pain. That is worth a vet visit before the next bath.

For what to look for in a pet shampoo, see our guide to choosing a pet shampoo in Malaysia.

Omega Pets makes shampoos and grooming products for cats and dogs, available at omegapets.com.my, through pet shop stockists across Malaysia, and on Shopee and Lazada. Suitability varies between animals, so check the product page or ask your vet if your cat has a skin condition or is very young.

Frequently asked questions

What should I do immediately after a cat bite?

Wash the wound with soap and water for at least 15 minutes, apply an antiseptic if you have one, and cover it loosely. If the skin is broken, see a doctor the same day, especially for a bite on the hand, face or near a joint, or from a stray. This is general information, not a substitute for medical care.

Can I claim SOCSO if my own cat bites me at home?

Possibly. Since 1 June 2026, PERKESO's LINDUNG 24 Jam scheme covers accidents outside working hours within Malaysia for contributors who are covered under it, and PERKESO has approved cat-bite claims. A doctor must confirm you need treatment, and the injury must affect your ability to work. Claims go through the LINDUNG Faedah portal or a PERKESO office, and PERKESO decides each one.

I was bitten by a cat at work. Which scheme applies?

It may be covered by PERKESO's Employment Injury Scheme if you are an employee who contributes to PERKESO and the bite happened while you were working, for example as a groomer, veterinary assistant or pet shop worker. PERKESO decides each case. Tell your employer the same day and keep your medical report and medical certificate.

Can you get rabies from a cat in Malaysia?

Rabies is a real risk in Sarawak, which has an ongoing outbreak. The Ministry of Health reported six human rabies deaths there in 2025 and said cats were involved in 61.6% of the animal bite and scratch cases recorded. Wherever you are, tell the doctor where the bite happened and whether the cat is a stray or unvaccinated.
